The McBrides of Fallbrook return with reformed bad boy Owen.
He'll do whatever he must to protect the woman who's captured his heart. Attorney by day, rancher by night Owen McBride conquered his dark past and made it his mission to help the innocent—even at the expense of a personal life. But when a client's abusive ex-husband targets Owen and his gorgeous neighbor Claire gets caught in the crossfire, his feelings turn anything but professional. The mysterious beauty awakens something in him, and he'll move heaven and earth to keep her safe.
Coffee shop owner Claire Walsh learned the hard way that handsome men aren't to be trusted. Owen may be sexy as hell and determined to take care of her, but she's reluctant to put her heart on the line. His presence in her life puts a target on her back, yet the more time she spends with him, the more she finds she can't help falling for Owen.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to Jennifer Ryan for a romance that didn't give me a single gray hair or facial wrinkle. It was smooooooooth! Even though there was suspense and danger, it made sense and was EASY. Not in the way that I wasn't involved, but in the way that I didn't want to FIX anything in the story. Every aspect of this book was reasonable and made SENSE. Not one person was over the top evil (although one person came close) or good, just relatively sane people in a situation that can and does happen. Not to say there was no excitement, there was, but it was an excitement of "Oh, wow! I did not see that coming!" or "OMG! That is the sexiest thing EVER!". This book just screams "Calgon, take me away!" (yeah, I know how dated that is) For my younger readers, this book hollas "Chill". *snort*
Both Owen and Claire have things in their pasts that are painful, but neither is prone to wallow in angst over much. There is some playful back and forth, some really incendiary chemistry, and some wonderfully hot, steamy sex that seemed perfectly in step with this couple. This book was REAL, and I appreciated that immensely. They both have little faults, but they worked to develop their relationship and the commitment they made to each other.
We also get to see more of Brody, Rain and Dylan. Brody still hasn't proposed. *snort* It's a running joke! I loved the whole McBride dynamic, two reformed badboys turned good and their cousin from the normal side of the family, who is now the law in Fallbrook. It's just fun and heartwarming and well worth a hearty recommendation and hale "Job well done!". Brava.
